Haha, I know. That would be so much more commendable than some stupid contest put together purely for publicity, using the key words "breast cancer" and "donation" as an excuse. Lame. I guess the people at Self Magazine don't know they're making themselves look bad. Also, shouldn't it be the breast cancer "hero" that's appearing in the magazine, not the person writing about them?

Charities are a very profitable business to be in in-case you was not aware of that little fact. By holding a contest instead of just donating, they increase readership, hence, also increase their own profits in the guise of humanitarianism.

I think this is a great idea. What is important is that they are helping let people know what is important and acknowledge someone important to them. SELF is the founder of the pink ribbon! Why do people always look for the bad. Who cares if this motivates someone to buy the magazine? Lots of people buy it already.
