this is a :30 PSA I made for a school assignment. The statistic is actually wrong, 1 in 8 women will not die of breast cancer, but 1 in 8 will be affected by it. I discovered the error before shooting it, but decided just to keep it as is since the message to get yourself tested was so important. And it was just a school assignment to practice lighting and shooting.

1 death in 8 does not translate to 2 in 16 when you are doubling the length of time. You must not be a math/statistics major. lol. If you start with 800, there will be 700 after a year, then 612, then 535, then 468, then 410, so you see in 5 years half the female population would die JUST from breast cancer alone. Obviously a poorly worded statistic since this can't be true.

You're right, 1 in 8 women will not die, but 1 in 8 will be affected by breast cancer. Meaning that they or a relative or a friend will get or die from breast cancer within a year. I discovered my error during the project but went ahead with it anyway since the point of the project was to urge women to get tested and I felt ok about exaggerating that urgency. I've learned my lesson that fact accuracy is obviously as important as aesthetics.

My sister has had breast cancer since 2002.
She hates these anti-cancer ads as much as I do. What good is endlessly, brainlessly preaching to women to get checked for breast cancer if there is nothing that can be done for it anyway? A far better solution: elect Ralph Nader or Socialists, throw out the American health-insurance industry, show some open-mindedness towards hiring math PhDs to work on the modelling of molecular science, and many more similarly radical plans.

8 of 8 of those women will die some time in their lives. Stupid point to make. If the ad producers want to make a point about breast cancer, show the numbers comparing the age at which 1 of these 8 women will die from breast cancer and the quality of that death versus the age of and quality of death by other means. We all die, therefore only quality of life matters. Personally, I believe technology will cure death some day. But, until then, what I say holds.

I think that a certain amount of information is correctly assumed: that the average life span of a healthy woman is longer than the average life span of a woman with breast cancer, and that if the breast cancer is discovered in an early stage through regular testing, that woman's life span can more closely resemble the healthy woman's.
I think we can give viewers credit for realizing that much.
